Northfield - The Evangelists Moody and Sankey, with Prof. [?] and Col. Whittle, had a consultation with George P. Stuart

and L.P. Rowland of Philadelphia,William E. Dodge Jr. and R.R. McBurney of New York, and D.W. McWilliams, T.H. Mervin and W.W. Wicks of Brooklyn at Northfield Tues., over the proposed revival campaign in America.

The work will be begun about November, and meantime Mr. Sankey has gone to his home at Newcastle, Pa. Mr. Moody will remain in Northfield, [?] and Bliss will work in the West and Southwest, and [?] will begin in St. Paul, Minn.

News about home: Greenfield items

Greenfield - D.L. Moody, the evangelist, was in town last Tues., and won the everlasting esteem of one of our grocers by purchasing 4 pounds of coffee. By the way, they tell the following little incident which occurred the other day when Mr. Moody and his wife went to Brattleboro shopping. Not being particularly interested in the purchases she was to make, he took a walk along the street, and when passing the store where his wife was engaged, one clerk called to another to come to the door and see the famous preacher.

The knight of the yardstick waiting upon Mrs. Moody said "There goes Moody, the revivalist, would you not like to see him? There are a plenty of better looking men than he is, ain't there?" The lady relished the joke, and of course had a good laugh over it with her husband.

W.J. Beaman, an artist from Westminster, is painting fine pictures from the natural scenery, which is so largely at command of an artist's eye.

[It appears that a relation of W.J., named Gamaliel Waldo Beaman, also an artist, so loved the Northfield countryside, that he took up residence with a mountain hermit there. See http://whitemountain...graphies/bio_gwb.htm ].

Samuel Alexander, who died here on Wed, aged 88 years, lived throughout his long life in the same house in which he was born, and was in the habit of eating his Thanksgiving dinner in the same room. His father, who lived to be 92 years of age, also dwelt before him in the same house from the time of his marriage, a century ago. Mr. Alexander was a soldier of the war of 1812, and the oldest member of Harmony Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons. He retained his faculties till the last, and ate dinner at the table with the family the day of his death.
