William H. Earle, President of the National Council Sovereigns of Industry, delivered an address in the Town Hall Wed. eve. Mr. Earle promised to tell the truth, and we think his promise was fulfilled. He portrayed in eloquent language the injustice of the present system of trade in our country, placing the power and wealth in the hands of a few and rendering impossible an equitable division between labor and capital. "Competition" said he "while it lowers the price of goods, also gives us impure groceries, shoddy cloth, short weight". The great remedy, said the speaker, for this state of affairs is "organization". Isolated and alone the laboring man has no chance. The laboring class combined have the power to resist successfully the encroachments of trade". The lecture was very interesting throughout, and was listened to with marked attention.

News about home: Greenfield items

Deputy Sheriff Bryant was required Wed. eve. to serve a legal notice upon the Town Clerk of New Salem. On getting out as far as North Leverett he found the snow so deep that he was obliged to abandon his buggy and procure a sleigh. Some of the roads had not been broken out after last winter's storms, and he made his way through the drifts with no little difficulty. His 20 miles out and 20 miles back was an all night's job, for which the legal fee of so much a mile was rather small pay.

South Deerfield

The recent conversion of Miss Cora I. Powers of New Salem, lately deceased, seems a timely preparation for her early departure. In Jan. last while attending one of the State YMCA meetings at South Deerfield, her soul was moved, and the following day the choice was made on the side of Christ and of life. In a letter written to one who had urged her surrender she stated soon after: "I would not give up the hope I have and be placed back where I was one week ago even for all the world contains. I trust there is one more name registered in heaven". Will not those who knew her ask to have their names "registered" in the Lamb's Book of Life (poem follows).
